Literary and Cultural Studies Landscape in Rwanda | Isura y'Ubuvanganzo n'Umuco mu Rwanda
Rwanda, the "Land of a Thousand Hills," is a nation in the heart of East Africa with a population exceeding 14 million [citation:1][citation:7]. Until 1900, Rwanda was a non-literate society, relying on oral storytelling to preserve its rich cultural heritage [citation:7]. Today, the country has made significant strides, achieving a literacy rate of 76 percent, markedly higher than 38 percent in 1978 [citation:7].
Rwandan literature is deeply rooted in oral traditions, which are traditionally classified into two main categories: official tradition—royal documents preserved by specific families under the supervision of Kings—and non-formal popular literature [citation:2][citation:4]. The country's literary heritage includes the royal genealogical list Ubucurabwenge, royal myths Ibitekerezo, royal poetry Ibisigo, and royal rituals Ubwiru [citation:4]. Through the University of Rwanda, the Rwanda Academy of Language and Culture, and other institutions, Rwanda continues to advance literary and cultural research with strong emphasis on oral traditions, post-genocide memory studies, and cultural identity.

Rwanda has a rich literary and cultural heritage shaped by centuries of oral tradition. The ancient Kingdom of Rwanda had a considerable body of oral literature, classified into formal royal documents and popular literature. To this day, storytelling and public speaking are much admired, and good storytellers are respected in society [citation:2][citation:4]. The Rwandan scholar Alexis Kagame researched the oral history of Rwanda and published numerous volumes of poetry and mythology [citation:2][citation:7]. Today, Rwanda is experiencing a cultural revival, with literature playing a key role in healing and regeneration [citation:8].
