JCRELC provides these guidelines to help reviewers conduct effective, ethical, and constructive peer reviews. These guidelines cover the review process, evaluation criteria, report structure, and best practices for reviewers.
The Journal of Creative Research in English Literature and Culture (JCRELC) relies on the expertise and dedication of our peer reviewers. These guidelines are designed to assist reviewers in providing high-quality, constructive feedback that helps authors improve their work and maintains the integrity of the scholarly record.
1. Before You Begin
Before accepting a review invitation, carefully consider the following:
Do You Have the Expertise?
- Are you familiar with the research topic?
- Do you have experience with the methodology used?
- Can you evaluate the theoretical framework?
- Are you confident in providing constructive feedback?
Do You Have the Time?
- Can you complete the review within 14 days?
- Do you have 2-4 hours available for a thorough review?
- Can you meet the deadline without compromising quality?
- If not, decline the invitation promptly
Do You Have a Conflict of Interest?
- Recent collaboration with authors (past 5 years)
- Personal or professional relationships
- Direct academic competition
- Financial or institutional conflicts
What to Do If You Need to Decline
- Respond promptly to the invitation
- Suggest alternative reviewers if possible
- Provide a brief reason for declining
- Thank the editor for the invitation

Key Steps in the Review Process
- Initial Read: Read the manuscript from start to finish for an overall impression
- Detailed Analysis: Evaluate each section (introduction, literature review, methodology, analysis, discussion, conclusion)
- Identify Strengths: Note what the manuscript does well
- Identify Weaknesses: Note areas needing improvement
- Formulate Recommendations: Provide specific, actionable suggestions
- Write the Report: Structure your feedback clearly and constructively
- Final Review: Review your report before submission
3. Evaluation Criteria
Reviewers should evaluate manuscripts based on the following criteria:
Originality & Significance
- Does the research make a novel contribution to the field?
- Is the research question or hypothesis significant?
- Does the work advance existing knowledge?
- Is the research timely and relevant?
Methodological Rigor
- Is the research methodology appropriate?
- Is the theoretical framework sound?
- Are the analytical approaches valid?
- Is the research design well-executed?
Clarity & Presentation
- Is the writing clear and concise?
- Is the manuscript well-organized and logical?
- Are the arguments well-supported?
- Does the manuscript follow formatting guidelines?
Literature & Context
- Is the literature review comprehensive and current?
- Is the research properly contextualized?
- Are key works appropriately cited?
- Does the work engage with existing scholarship?
Ethical Compliance
- Does the research comply with ethical standards?
- Are conflicts of interest disclosed?
- Is there evidence of plagiarism?
- Is proper attribution given to sources?
Contribution & Impact
- Does the research contribute to scholarly discourse?
- Are there practical or theoretical implications?
- Is the research relevant to contemporary issues?
- Does it have potential for future research?
4. Review Report Structure
Effective review reports should include the following sections:
Summary
Brief overview of the manuscript content and its contribution to the field. Include the main research question, methodology, and key findings.
Length: 2-3 paragraphs
Major Comments
Significant issues affecting the publication decision. Include specific suggestions for improvement and justification for each comment.
Length: Detailed paragraphs
Minor Comments
Specific suggestions for improvement in writing, formatting, or presentation. Include typographical errors, grammar issues, and referencing problems.
Length: Bullet points or brief notes
Confidential Comments: Additional notes for editors only may be included in a separate section. These comments are not shared with authors.
Recommended Decision
Reviewers are asked to recommend one of the following decisions:
Accept
Minor Revision
Major Revision
Reject
Provide a brief justification for your recommended decision.
5. Writing Tips for Reviewers
Do's
- Be specific and provide examples
- Use constructive, respectful language
- Support your comments with evidence
- Suggest ways to improve the work
- Be balanced—acknowledge strengths too
- Focus on the work, not the authors
- Use clear, concise language
- Structure your comments logically
Don'ts
- Don't be vague or unsubstantiated
- Don't use personal attacks or condescending language
- Don't focus only on minor issues
- Don't request unnecessary changes
- Don't compare unfavorably to your own work
- Don't ignore ethical concerns
- Don't exceed the scope of the review
- Don't disclose your identity to authors
Example Review Comments
Effective Comment:
"The theoretical framework is well-developed. However, the connection between the theory and the analysis could be strengthened. Consider adding a section that explicitly links the theoretical concepts to your findings."
Ineffective Comment:
"The methodology is weak. This needs to be fixed."
This comment lacks specificity and actionable guidance.
6. Confidentiality & Ethics
Confidentiality Requirements
- Do not share manuscripts with anyone
- Do not discuss manuscripts with others
- Do not upload manuscripts to AI tools
- Delete manuscripts after review completion
- Maintain anonymity throughout
- Do not use unpublished information for personal advantage
Ethical Standards
- Declare conflicts of interest immediately
- Provide objective, unbiased feedback
- Avoid personal criticism
- Support claims with evidence
- Alert editors to ethical concerns
